Abdullah retired from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia after serving as the Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia in Turkey from 2013 2015. His long experience in international diplomacy started when he started his career with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs upon graduation from the School of Social and Political Sciences, Diponegoro University, Semarang – Indonesia in 1982. He had assumed positions within the Indonesian Embassy in several different countries and in the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Indonesia to the United Nations in Vienna, Austria and then in Geneva, Switzerland. He served as the Deputy Chief of Mission of the Republic of Indonesia in Manila from 2008 to 2011.

His in-depth understanding of international trade agreements, among others, UNCITRAL and WTO, is the result gained from the important rules he held in the Indonesian delegations that were sent to the diplomatic fora. He earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Philippine Christian University in 2009, and further trained in diplomatic courses such as the Course in Strategic Planning and Foreign Policy for High Level Diplomats held by the Clingendale Institute, the Netherlands, in 2004
